The Importance of Names
What’s in a name – Mmmm… Now there’s a thought to ponder…
– Did we choose our name? or did our name choose us?
Have you ever wondered about your name; why your parents chose it; what it really means and why we feel the way we do about it?
I am here to tell you, your name is no error even if it contains a mistake; has been misspelled, is not your gender, after a football team, reversed or written in a handwriting you had to guess at, this is the name you chose to have before coming here to earth.
Now that may be a little hard to acknowledge depending on your belief system; so if you found my last statement difficult to accept and still believe or blame your parents for your name I will add the following – whether your parents knew your name their whole life or it took them 10 seconds to decide, this name IS 100% meant to be your name.
Names are labels, a way we identify ourselves. Throughout time the giving of names has become significant in how we are recognised.
Examples stem from belonging to our father in names like Hud’s son or John’s son
Or our mother’s with names like Molson (from Moll, shortened version of Mary), Madison (from Maud) or Emmott (from Emma)
A name may have been associated with one’s job, Tailor or Miller.
Some names were taken from the location they came from, River, Creek or Hill.
While others may have come from a characteristic, Long, Tall or Little for the body type or Green, Black or Blue from the eyes.
If you worked for the kingdom, you may have been called Knight, Earl or King
Others were named after objects including plants such as Rose, Heather, or Moss.
And if your name ends with ‘El’ a name for God this signified power; an interesting example of an ‘el’ would be Lionel (Lion God).
With regards to a name like Peacock, they may have developed from vanity.
